Facebook announced the appointment of Rajiv Aggarwal, a former IAS officer, as Director of Public Policy on Monday. Aggarwal will oversee critical policy development projects for the social media giant in India, including user safety, data protection, privacy, inclusion, and internet governance.
Aggarwal will be a member of the India leadership team and report to Ajit Mohan, Vice President and Managing Director, Facebook India.
“We recognise that we are deeply ingrained in India’s fabric and that we have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a more inclusive and secure internet that benefits everyone in the country. I am ecstatic that Rajiv will be leading the Public Policy team. Rajiv’s knowledge and experience will contribute to our aim of fostering transparency, accountability, and empowered and safe communities, all of which we recognise as our obligation “In a statement, Mohan added.
Aggarwal is an IAS officer with 26 years of experience. He oversaw India’s first ever national policy on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) as Joint Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (M/o Commerce) and was essential in the digital transformation of India’s IP offices during his time as an administrative officer.
In addition to being the country’s principal negotiator on IPRs with other countries, he has been intimately connected with the India-US bilateral trade conference.
He most recently worked at Uber as the Head of Public Policy for India and South Asia.
Aggarwal’s hiring follows a flurry of senior and executive hires in recent months in marketing, alliances, communications, and other critical areas, indicating the company’s growing commitment to India.
